Pop piano Improvisation
For Beginners
(Understudy Program)
Course outline can be customised to student's needs if needed. As lessons are conducted one-to-one, all lessons will be
conducted according to student's learning pace and level.  * Choice of own songs (Student will learn different ways to
improvise his/her chosen songs.)

Piano Techniques:
Designed for PBES Level 1

Rhythm and Accompaniment:
Able to play block chords (1 + 3 + 5)
Able to play (1 – 5 – 8) broken chord
Able to play (1 – 5 – 10) broken chord
Able to play (1 – 5 – 1 – 3 - 5) broken chord

Musicianship:
Able to play basic comping pattern I
Able to end a song with C (add9)
Understanding the usage of sustain pedal
Music Theory:
To learn the fundamentals of music notation
To learn the formation of basic major and
minor triads
To learn the formation of slash chords

Right hand techniques:
Able to play single note melody

PBES Level 1 Assessment:
(Non complusory)
Play a simple piece of music in C key using
basic 4-beat or 8-beat patterns (block or
broken) with 2 hands
The POP PIANO IMPROVISATION (for beginners) program covers
Level 1 of the P.B.E.S (Play by Ear Syllabus), the preparatory stage
before official commencement of the POP PIANO IMPROVISATION Level
2 program. The student will understudy an assigned Pop Piano instructor
to develop the basics of finger coordination, chord formation and piano
background but who are keen to play Pop Piano the easy, progressive
and inspiring way. The course will involve lots of practical hands-on and
will cover only the necessary music theory to get you started. Students
can learn their favourite songs even from the start, using both hands.

On average, students are able to play a 'decent' piece of music with
simple improvisation, using both hands within a couple of months. The
duration of the course varies according to individual learning speeds, but
students will automatically proceed to the PBES Level 2 POP PIANO
IMPROVISATION course 3-4 months later.

The student is allowed to learn ANY chosen song, from the latest
English/Chinese Pop hits, Worship/Hymn songs, Oldies etc., provided the
song is within the student's playing capabilities.

The course will be ideal for:
1) anyone with very little or ZERO music background
2) anyone with the passion to play the piano using the pop approach as
opposed to classical.

By the end of P.B.E.S. level 1, you will be able to play very simple songs comfortably
from fake sheets in C key. You will develop a good sense rhythm & coordination skills
for both hands, together with proper fingering techniques. You will also be able to read
and interpret simple notation and chord symbols.
PBE 2HRS Supplementary Workshops
Workshops are 'one-off' optional 2 hours supplementary workshops ($38 per pax) There will only be
a maximum of 6 students in the master class studio. Each student is equipped with a full size 88key
Digital Piano for hands on purpose.
