OUR STUDENTS (Chun Ying, a third-year National University of Singapore law student, speaks of her love affair with music and song composition.)
Introduction of Kim Yong
Kim Yong has started his music venture with Play By Ear only at the end of last year. As many who have joined us, he has no prior music backgrounds
in any ways. Claiming that it has always be his dream to be able to play the keyboard, he came for his first lesson and alas, he came in tennis gear. I
was kind of surprise as a teacher to see a student in such an outfit coming for piano lesson and to be honest, it was kind of amusing. As weeks go by,
I started to get a better and understanding of Kim Yong and realize that this “sporty keyboardist” is actually very hard working. He’s always there on
time for all his lessons and has never once failed to deliver his confidence when it comes to learning new techniques that are not within his comfort
zone. On top of that, he’s also balancing with his academic and yes, lots of sports. Thus, I am really honored to do an interview with him and recorded
him playing a piece. Below is the interview I had with him and also a video of him playing a popular Chinese hit, Shen Hua. Do check it out, cheers!
How long have you been learning with Play By Ear?
Approximately 1 month.
I see, did you have any prior music backgrounds?
No, I only picked up music when I started to learn here.
Q: What has been your biggest challenge so far?
Erm, I guess it’s the coordination between both hands, its gets a little confusing at times.
Q: I see, so are you going to play for us something that you have learnt over the three months?
Sure, I will like to play the song by Jackie Chan, Shen Hua.
