Play by ear is a term to describe any person who is able to listen to any
song and play it out on the piano (or any instrument) with improvisation,
without the need for musical notation for both hands. Playing by ear can
also mean improvising a piece of music from Fake Sheets (Or lead sheets,
chord charts). A person capable of such improvisation is also regarded as
a musician.
Typical Classical Piano players may realise that they are unable to play by
ear. This is because improvisation was never or rarely taught in Classical
training, which is why most classical pianists find it difficult to play anything
off their heads. Take any typical Grade 8 classical pianist for instance. Ask
them to play & improvise a simple 'Happy Birthday' song. Very likely they
can't, simply because they don't have the scores in front of them. (Sounds
familiar?)
First, let's understand the difference between a player and a musician. A
player is someone who needs instructions to play. A perfect example will
be a typical traditional pianist who needs pre-arranged score sheets in
order to play. Think in terms of an audio CD player. Without a CD (Disc),
the CD player cannot play, simply because it has nothing to play! A
musician is different. He is someone who has a creative mind, is able to
create his own tunes and play it in any style he prefers on the fly.
The term Play by ear (or improvisation) usually goes with Pop Piano rather than Classical Piano. When we say Pop Piano, we
refer to the style of playing or the genre of music and not the instrument. If you have trouble understanding the differences

There are generally only 2 types of music: Classical & Pop. Classical refers to very old songs composed during the 17th to
early 20th century, like songs from Beethoven or Mozart. People do not usually improvise Classical pieces, because of the culture
to replicate the exact composition arrangement by the legendary Classical composers. Anything that is not Classical is classified
as Pop or Contemporary in general, which includes Pop/Rock, latest radio hits, Jazz, Christian contemporary, the Blues, R&B,
Chinese/English Oldies and others. And since there are these 2 types of music, there are generally only 2 types of music schools
1) Traditional (Classical) School 2) Contemporary (Pop) School
Way back in the past, (some 10-15 years ago), there were few Pop Music Schools available, or almost none. True musicians were
very rare in those days and besides they would rather perform in the entertainment scene or work as recording sessionists than
teach due to monetary reasons. Everyone thus has the impression that musicians are simply gifted. It's either you have the talent
or you don't. Which is, of course, not true.
Today, there is an increasing demand for Pop Music Schools, particularly Pop Piano. The piano’s versatility has probably
accounted for its popularity and its place in almost every household in the modern world. This is also simply due to the music we
listen today. Adults in particular are realising the practical side of learning music - to play the music they listen to. Because of
the increasing demand, many of the Traditional (Classical) Schools have become 'Hybrid' Schools that teach both Classical & Pop
music, so as to have a share of the 'Pop market'.
It is essential to understand the true culture of a music school and its teachers. A player is someone who is able to play pop
pieces, whether by sight or memory, but is not qualified to teach Pop Piano. Only a true musician is qualified to teach Pop Piano
and because of the lack of musicians in the market, many Players have proclaimed themselves as Pop Piano teachers. Play By
Ear Music School is a genuine Contemporary (Pop) School that specialises only in Pop & Jazz Piano Improvisation since
2003. Our instructors are qualified musicians who have worked in the local music industry for years and trained in-house in
accordance to our P.B.E.Syllabus.
