How to do colorful fill-ins (for Intermediate-advanced)  
The most sought after techniques that every pianist wish to learn. In this workshop, we will cover
almost everything we can about fill-ins in both solo-piano style and comping. You will learn how to
join chords during fill-ins, how to use modes and typical riffs, what to do during a typical (V) chord
bar, how to do basic chord substitution that helps in creating more color to your overall fill-ins. A
must attend.

Workshops
The PBE PIANO WORKSHOPS are 'one-off' optional 2 hours
supplementary workshops for Play By Ear
current students and public.
There will only be a maximum of 6 students in the master class studio.
Each student is equipped with a full size 88key Digital Piano for hands-on
purpose.
The workshop instructor is equipped with a Piano along with a
LIVE camera system, where his or her hands (playing) will be shown
LIVE on the screen.
The students are also provided with notes for every
individual PBE workshop.

The PBE workshops will be ideal for:
1) anyone with or without music background. Students without
background can attend the (complete beginners) workshop, students with
little background can attend the (for beginners) workshop, and
intermediate-advance students can attend the regular workshops
.
*Current PBE students can also sign up any workshop in replacement of
their makeup lessons (if any)

Sick of playing in ballad style? This workshop is an intensive introduction to the different genres in
music, and how you can apply that to contemporary piano. Learn how to play in 5 different styles
using our fool proof methods, in styles of New Age, R&B, Rock, Swing, Reggae.

Effective methods to improving your co-ordination and rhythm (for beginners)
One of the most common challenges most beginners face is the co-ordination of both hands with a
proper rhythm. This workshop covers practical exercises, designed by the PBE team over the years,
to ease beginners through the initial learning stages.  Topics include: playing with 2 hands, proper
usage of sustain pedal, playing without counting, finger strength, etc.

Introduction to Song Composition (for beginners)
Ever felt like creating a song on the piano instead of playing songs others have written? Song writing
can be complex but can also be incredible simple.  We'll share the easiest and fastest ways to
kickstart your musical creativity. You'll form your very own song with these building blocks - a
melody, chord progression and rhythm.  Then again, composition is really just improvisation, which
is what many musicians do on-the-fly.  Master this and you're well on your way to becoming a more
well-rounded pianist.

How to play like Jay Chou (for beginners)
If you are a Chinese music fan, this course is a must attend for you! Learn how you can play Jay
Chou or other Chinese songs with that few similar chords. Even if you are a real beginner, you will
learn to play and sing any of your favorite Chinese tunes using a ‘short-cut’ method of only
memorizing 3 chords. In this workshop, you will also understand and learn how to easily write a
whole new song with pre-written Chinese lyrics and chord progressions.

Chords are everything you need in music improvisation. In this NON-BORING and entertaining
workshop, you will learn the easiest methods on earth to forming any chord instantly, without ever

Tips & Tricks for Praise & Worship
If you are already playing in a church or in any worship context, this workshop is going to benefit
you. We will share with you valuable tips & tricks on how you can improve your playing – how to play
in free style when someone is praying and what to play when you are forced to do an introduction.
Learn how to play in different styles in worship keyboard especially in up tempo rhythm. You will also
learn how to use ‘motives’, which is an essential technique to melody improvisation especially in
worship free-style.

A serious 2-hour Ear training Programme
Playing by ear isn’t all about the ear, but a good set of ears will certainly help you. In this workshop,
you will learn how to identify chord colors, chord progressions, aiming to develop relative pitch
hearing. You will also learn how to figure out songs from MP3 on your own, how to compose
something out of nothing and vice versa.

How to impress others with your playing (for intermediate-advanced)
Playing music is about sharing, and that is our motto of PLAY BY EAR. This 2 hrs workshop is
interestingly”non- serious“ yet useful to any musician. You will learn all the simple tricks that you can
learn quickly to “wow” yourself before you impress others.  Learn how to play "fast" without actually
really playing fast, learn to play in different genre using proven short cut methods in just an hour,
learn how to end a song in style, learn how to play a "sad" happy birthday for fun. A must attend!

Left hand improvisation 2 (for Intermediate-advanced)
Tired of your predictable and boring left hand variations? Explore more in this workshop. You will be
amazed how easy it is to vary a basic triad on your left hand in styles like ballads/newage, rock,
bossa nova, swing, etc. Using techniques like approach notes, 'wide playing', block chord voicings
and much more! Highly recommended for players who are already able to improvise on their own.

What can you do with your left hand besides the usual 1-5-8 pattern? Block chords? More broken
chords? In this workshop we will explore some of the basic variations for your left hand that are
applicable for most of your favourite songs. Suitable for beginners who just started the piano.

How to play & sing (for beginners)  
Do you enjoy singing? Even as a karaokist or a professional vocalist, you can learn how to
accompany your playing with your singing! In this workshop, you will be learning some of the basic
comping patterns and easy chord progressions and voice leading patterns. Be a versatile music

3HRS PBE SYNTHESIZER CLINIC (for Intermediate-advanced)
This is a technical clinic for musicians who are enthusiastic about MIDI Synthesizers and audio
production. The start of the clinic covers the introduction of MIDI and their practical usage, then
moves on to the basic navigations in typical synthesizers. Both the Yamaha MOX6 and CASIO
WK7500 will be used for demonstrations. Other techniques include basic to advance patch editing,
overview of different synthesis, layering, split, arpeggiator, MIDI recording and audio (*.wav)
recording, and an overview of multi track recording.

Jonatan Saiman will also share his years of experience as a professional keyboardist while discussing
some of the important points to live stage performances, pre-configurations using multi-layer setups
and other important aspects of being a keyboardist.
